Rose Festival Tour in Bulgaria


Departures daily between 15 May and 15 June excluding 1-3 June

Rose pedals are picked once a year in the famous Valley of the Roses near Kazanlak in Bulgaria the area renowned for its Rose oil production since ancient times. This natural rose oil is called the liquid gold since it is very expensive and is widely sought after in the perfumery industry. This is the Valley of the ancient Thracian people, important neighbors and allies of ancient Greeks.


5 nights/6 days

Join the locals for rose-picking in the rose fields of the Kazanlak Valley and take part in the colorful carnival procession with a BBQ lunch and local folklore show. We will start in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital city, one of the oldest cities in Europe. During our trip we will visit also 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites, Rila Monastery, the old center of medieval Plovdiv and a rare original Thracian Tomb, testimony of the Valley’s importance in ancient times


Day 1. SOFIA
Arrival to Sofia airport. Transfer, check into the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. overnight. D.

After breakfast panoramic tour around the Bulgarian capital and visit to the most interesting historical sights: the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the St. Sofia Church, which had given the name of the city and the historical and cultural center of the capital.
Departure to the Rila monastery, founded in 10th c. It has been the biggest and most important Bulgarian spiritual center since the Middle Ages. The monastery has rich collection of icons, wall-paintings, old-printed books – about 15 000 volumes. Guided tour around the monastery. It is in the UNESCO list of world heritage. Departure to Plovdiv.  Accommodation dinner and overnight in 4* hotel (Leipzig or similar). B, D.

Day 3 – Plovdiv (B)
Plovdiv, one of the oldest cities in Europe dates back to the 4th century BC. It was called Philippopolis and named after King Philip II of Macedonia. Today Plovdiv is a cultural center of Bulgaria and selected as European Capital of Culture for 2019. After breakfast we will embark on a walking tour of the Old Town of Plovdiv impressive with the houses-museums of the Revival period, then visit Bachkovo monastery, one of many beautiful places in Rhodopy Mountains. We are going to visit the monastery, see the church. Accommodation dinner and overnight in Plovdiv.

Day 4 – Plovdiv – ROSE VALLEY – Veliko Tarnovo (B, D)
After breakfast – depart to Kazanlak – the capital of the rose valley. We will join the local people in the rose-picking in the rose plantations near Kazanlak. Visit of authentic operating rose-distillery and introduction to the technology of production of rose oil (a sought after component in the perfume and cosmetics industry more expensive than pure gold.), followed by tasting of rose products.
In the afternoon – visit an ancient Thracian Tomb, dating back to the 4th C. BC and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Drive to Etara – a unique open air museum, reproducing the way of life of the Bulgarians in the 19th c. It is a great attraction for tourists, one of the most visited places in the country. Departure to Veliko Tarnovo for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 – Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia (B, D)
After breakfast – city tour of the old capital of Bulgaria – Veliko Tarnovo. Visit the Wax museum, the ruins of the historical hill Tsarevets with the Fortress, the Patriarchal church and the Emperor Baldwin’s Tower. We will walk along the old Trade Street Samovodska charshia.  Drive to Arbanassi village, famous for its ancient rich decorated churches and magnificent architecture. It used to be a residence of the Bulgarian kings. Departure to Sofia. Accommodation, dinner and overnight in Sofia.

Day 6 – Sofia
After breakfast – free time. Transfer to the airport and flight back home.
