The Treasures of Bulgaria and Romania tour is 15 days and 14 nights. Visit Sofia, Rila, Plovdiv, Kazanlak, Veliko Tarnovo, Arbanassi, Madara, Sveshtari, Russe, Ivanovo, Bucharest, Curtea De Arges, Sibiu, Valea Viilor, Sighișoara, Sucevita, Piatra Neamț, Brasov, Bran Castle, Sinaia and Bucharest.

Day 01 SOFIA
Arrival in Sofia – the capital of Bulgaria. Accommodation and overnight in Sofia.

Day 02 SOFIA – RILA MONASTERY – SOFIA
Departure to the Rila Monastery a 10th century, UNESCO World Heritage site. This is the largest and the most impressive Bulgarian monastery. Take a tour of the monastery complex, church and museum with its lavish collection of precious old manuscripts, icons, jewelry, masterpieces of woodcarving, ethnographic exhibition of fabrics and carpets. Return to Sofia, overnight.

Day 03 SOFIA – PLOVDIV
This morning is sightseeing tour of Sofia, a city with a 7000 year history that concentrates numerous cultural and historic monuments from different periods. Visits to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the St. George Rotunda from the 4th century, the St.Sophia Basilica, the Ruins of Serdica. Continue to Plovdiv, ranking second in importance after Sofia. Overnight in Plovdiv.

Day 04 PLOVDIV – BACHKOVO MONASTERY – KAZANLAK
Plovdiv is one of the most ancient cities in Europe and in the world. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of the Old town of Plovdiv with its National Revival architecture and excavations from Roman times. Visit the ancient Roman theatre with impressive marble statues, decorative columns and arcades. We tour the 11th century Bachkovo Monastery. This houses one of the richest galleries of traditional Bulgarian religious art with exquisite murals and medieval icons. Next we departure for Kazanlak, the capital of the famous Valley of Roses. Overnight in Kazanlak.

Day 05 KAZANLAK – TRYAVNA – VELIKO TARNOVO
Today we visit the Kazanlak Historical Museum to see the Thracian golden treasures. Then we continue to the UNESCO listed  Thracian Tomb dating back from the 4th century B.C. we will see a replica of the Thracian Tomb. After this we depart for the town of Tryavna for a walking tour. See vaulted stone bridges, houses, churches and the square with a clock tower preserve the spirit and talent of the artists from Tryavna School of Art from the 17th century. We’ll visit the Woodcarving Museum before continuing on to Veliko Tarnovo. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.

Day 06 VELIKO TURNOVO – ARBANASSI
We start with a sightseeing tour of Veliko Turnovo, including a walk on Samovodska Charshiya the traditional arts and crafts street. We will also visit Tsarevets hill which is an impressive sight with the ruins of medieval fortifications. Nest we depart to the museum town of Arbanassi boasting a genuine gallery of religious art in the Church of Nativity. We’ll see Konstantsalieva house, a fine example of  a wealthy merchants 17th century house. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.

Day 07 VELIKO TURNOVO – MADARA – SVESHTARI  – ROUSSE
Departure to Madara to marvel  the famous Madara Rider carving  high up on a 100 meter high cliff, a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. Continue to  Sveshtari Thracian Tomb also a UNESCO monument with its painted murals and carved wall figures. The unique architectural décor of the tomb includes 10 female figures carved in the walls and painted murals, a remarkable example of the culture of the Thracian people. Overnight in Rousse.

Day 08 ROUSSE – IVANOVO -BUCHARESTTreasures of Bulgaria and Romania
In the morning we take a tour of Rousse before departing to Ivanovo, a World Heritage complex where we will admire the famous medieval rock churches, chapels and cells of monks carved into the rocks overlooking the Lom river. Visit the main church.  In the afternoon departure to Bucharest. Dinner and accommodation in Bucharest.

Day 09 BUCHAREST – CURTEA DE ARGES – SIBIU
In the morning we take a panoramic sightseeing tour of Bucharest, before our departure to Curtea de Arges, the former capital of Wallachia. Visit the Episcopal Church where the Romanian Kings are buried.  We then drive along the picturesque Olt Valley to Sibiu (on the way we stop and visit the Cozia Monastery, built by Mircea the Elder, Vlad Dracul’s grandfather). This is one of the oldest towns in Transylvania, formerly Hermannstadt and was founded by the Saxon colonists. Take a guided walking tour of the medieval town (the Main Square, the Evangelical Church, the Liars’ Bridge etc.). Dinner and overnight in Sibiu

Day 10 SIBIU – VALEA VIILOR – SIGHIȘOARA
A morning drive to the heart of Transylvania to visit the secret retreat for the royalty of Europe. The Saxon villages display a remarkable, unspoiled harmony between people and landscape. Visit the village of Valea Viilor and discover the impressive fortified church. Drive on to Sighișoara, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (“Dracula”). Visit the medieval citadel (the “Upper Town”): the Clock Tower, the Church on the Hill etc.) Dinner and night in Sighisoara.

Day 11 SIGHISOARA – SUCEVITA
After breakfast, continue to Targu Mures – visit of the elegant city center with the well known art nouveau cultural palace. Drive on to Bistrita – one of the 7 main medieval towns of “Siebenbürgen” (the German name for Transylvania). Continuation through Tihuta Pass. Typical dinner and accommodation at Sucevita.

Day 12  SUCEVITA – MONASTERIES – PIATRA NEAMT
Today we have a full day in Bucovina, the land of the UNESCO World Heritage listed painted monasteries. We also visit the Moldovita and Sucevita monasteries and can see their outside frescoes. Lunch is en route, then visit the famous monastery of Voronet, known as “the Sistine Chapel of the Orient”. This afternoon we drive south to visit the Agapia monastery. Dinner and accommodation in Piatra Neamt.

Day 13 PIATRA NEAMT –  POIANA BRASOV 
Departure across the mountains to Brasov through the spectacular Bicaz Gorges – the Red Lake – Miercurea Ciuc. Lunch en route. Visit the beautiful fortified church of Prejmer. Late afternoon arrival in Brasov, a medieval town from the the early 12th century, enjoy a panoramic sightseeing and guided walking tour. Late afternoon arrival at Poiana Brasov, a popular hill side resort with marvelous vistas in a pine forest.  Check-in at the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Poiana Brasov .

Day 14 BRASOV – BRAN – SINAI – BUCHAREST Treasures of Bulgaria and Romania
Departure to Bran for a visit to “Dracula’s Castle”. Drive across the mountains to Sinaia. Lunch. Visit the Sinaia Monastery (1695) and the fabulous Peles Castle – former summer residence of the Royal family. Late afternoon drive to Bucharest. Upon arrival visit the outdoor Village Museum. Farewell dinner in a typical restaurant. Accommodation in a Bucharest hotel.

Day 15 BUCHAREST
In the morning free time in central Bucharest for visits and shopping (subject to the flight schedule) and transfer to the airport. End of our services.
