The Balkan Mountain Adventure is a tour in the Western part of the Balkan mountain range, along ancient routes where we will enjoy beautiful scenery, unique rock formations and two of the most interesting caves in Bulgaria, as well as some monasteries and historic sites. The tourists will enter the Bulgarian villages atmosphere and will taste homemade ecologically clean food. You will see Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, the UNESCO listed Boyana church, the UNESCO listed Madara horseman rock formation, the first Bulgarian capital Pliska, the oldest processed gold in the world in Varna archeological museum, the UNESCO listed old town of Nessebar , the replica of the UNESCO listed Thracian Tomb in Kazanlak, old Plovdiv (including the Roman theater), Bachkovo monastery and the UNESCO listed Rila monastery.
DAY 1. Sofia (D)
Arrive in Sofia, then we will transfer you from the airport to your accommodation. Enjoy a welcome dinner and overnight in Sofia.
DAY 2. Sofia (B)
After breakfast panoramic tour around Sofia, an ancient city 8500 years old. Visit to the most interesting places: the forum of Ancient Serdica (the old name of the city) with the newest archeological discoveries from Roman time, which are exhibited next to the Bulgarian presidency. Next is the St. Nedelya square, where 4 worship buildings of the main religions in Bulgaria are located next to each other. These are the Orthodox Church St. Nedelya, the Catholic church, the Synagogue and the Mosque. They form a quadrangle, symbolizing the peace between different religions in Bulgaria. Our tour continues with the “Alexander I” square where the Royal Palace and the National Theatre are located, “Tzar Osvoboditel” boulevard, the Parliament, the Church of ”St. Sofia” (the name means wisdom), which had given the name of the city, the Sofia University and the “Alexander Nevsky” Cathedral (the biggest Orthodox church on the Balkan peninsula). Next we will visit the most remarkable object in the outskirts of Sofia, in the foot of Vitosha Mountain. This is Boyana Church – a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated in the Boyana district, near Sofia. The monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The church is one of the most completely and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art. The frescoes in the church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings and initiating the beginning of the European Renaissance. In the afternoon you have free time to explore Sofia by your own. Walk along through the pedestrian Vitosha Art Boulevard. This is the place in Sofia, where you can feel the spirit and live of the city. There are a lot of boutiques, shops, cozy cafes and restaurants.
Optional: Dinner at a typical Bulgarian folk style restaurant: excellent cuisine, great selection of wines and folklore show. Overnight in Sofia.
DAY 3. Sofia – Arbanassi – Veliko Tarnovo (B, D)
After breakfast visit of the nature park Vrachanski Balkan, a unique nature complex with 56 species of protected plants, 138 species of protected animals, more than 500 caves. Hiking with a guide along the Vratsa eco-path (for about 2 hours) among extremely beautiful nature. Picnic lunch in the foot of a picturesque waterfall. Visit of another natural phenomenon , Ledenika cave, which is one of the most visited caves in Bulgaria. Due to it’s very good acoustic, underground symphonic orchestras often take place in the cave. Set off to the town of Varshets, the most famous SPA resort in this part of Bulgaria, rich with mineral water springs with proven therapeutic effect. Accommodation, dinner and overnight at the Tintyava hotel.
DAY 4. After breakfast climb to the fort near Belogradchik and sightseeing around the picturesque rocks, each with its own name. Nature has been curving the stone shapes for more than 200 million years. In the afternoon we will enter the fantastic underground world of Magurata cave with colorful paintings on the rocks which are preserved in its labyrinths.. These are real masterpieces of the prehistoric art in Southeast Europe. In the cave we will taste some sparkling and still wines, which are stored inside. In the end of this unique trip, we will have free time to relax near the Rabishko lake, one of the oldest tectonic lakes in Europe. Accommodation in a 2-stars hotel with all conditions for a pleasant stay. The hosts will cook home made dishes, which are typical for this region. Dinner. Overnight.
DAY 5. After breakfast set off for the town of Vidin, established in 3rd c. B.C. on the riverbank of the Danube. We will see Baba Vida, the only fully preserved castle in Bulgaria from the Middle ages, dating from 10th c. This national cultural monument was used as background for many movies. We will see the St. Demetrius cathedral, one of the largest in Bulgaria; the cross-shaped military barracks from the beginning of 19th c.; the mosque of a local feudal Osman Pazvantoglu, ending on its top with a heart (symbol of independence). Free time for a walk in the city park. With its preserved original layout, the park is a historic landmark. The combination of an English park layout and Baroque forms of vegetation gives the park an unique, typically Bulgarian look. The riverbank park is located along the bank of the Danube and includes wonderful beaches and recreation places. Optional: a romantic boat trip along the Danube. We will enjoy some other places of interest of the town and a beautiful view to the neighbouring Romania. Return to Belogradchik. Dinner and overnight in the hotel
DAY 6. After breakfast we will leave for Chiprovtsi, a town known for its goldsmith traditions and the production of the famous Chiprovtsi style hand-woven carpets. We will be guests at a local house, where we will learn about the secrets of hand-weaving, dating back to 17th c. We will also visit the Lopushanski monastery, keeping one of the most exquisite wall-paintings in Northwest Bulgaria. The monastery is well-known for its excellent cuisine and aged wines. Late in the afternoon departure for the town of Berkovitsa famous with its ancient history, exceptionally beautiful nature and its raspberry plantations. Dinner at an ancient local house specialized in eco-tourism which offers excellent cuisine. Accommodation and overnight in 2-stars hotel in Berkovitsa
DAY 7 Walking along the town of Berkovitsa and visit the ancient fortress of the town, one of the studios from the local ceramics school. Next is an exotic mountain photo-safari, which will finish with tasting of the magnificent local raspberry wine. In the afternoon departure to Sofia through Petrohan pass, where we will become familiar with the technology of producing of the renowned ecologically clean buffalo-cow yoghurt. After tasting some yoghurt we will return to Sofia for a dinner and overnight. .
DAY 8. Transfer to the airport and flight back home.
