Rose pedals are picked once a year in the famous Valley of the Roses near Kazanlak in Bulgaria the area renowned for its Rose oil production since ancient times. This natural rose oil is called the liquid gold since it is very expensive and is widely sought after in the perfumery industry. This is the Valley of the ancient Thracian people, important neighbors and allies of ancient Greeks

Join the locals for rose-picking in the rose fields of the Kazanlak Valley and take part in the colorful carnival procession with a BBQ lunch and local folklore show. We will start in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital city, one of the oldest cities in Europe. During our trip we will visit also 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites, Rila Monastery, the old center of medieval Plovdiv and a rare original Thracian Tomb, testimony of the Valley’s importance in ancient times

ITINERARY:

Day 1. SOFIA
Arrival to Sofia airport. Transfer and accommodation in a 4* hotel( Best Western Premier Thracia or similar). Welcome dinner and overnight. D.

Day 2.
SOFIA- RILA MONASTERY- PLOVDIV
After breakfast panoramic tour around the Bulgarian capital and visit to the most interesting historical sights: the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, the St. Sofia Church, which had given the name of the city and the historical and cultural center of the capital.
Departure to the Rila monastery, founded in 10th c. It was the biggest Bulgarian medieval spiritual centre. The monastery has rich collection of icons, wall-paintings, old-printed books – about 15 000 volumes. Guided tour around the monastery. It is in the UNESCO list of world heritage. Departure to Plovdiv.  Accommodation dinner and overnight in 4* hotel (Leipzig or similar). B, D.

Day 3. PLOVDIV
City tour to the Old town, built in the 4th century B.C. by King Philip of Macedonia, with the Ethnographical museum, the oldest church “St. Constantine and Elena”, the Antique Theatre and the Roman Stadium. In the afternoon free time at leisure. Overnight in the hotel. B.

Day 4.  KAZANLAK – ROSE FESTIVAL – ETARA – VELIKO TARNOVO
Early in the morning we will take breakfast boxes from the hotel and depart to Kazanlak – the capital of the Rose valley. We will join the local people in rose-picking at the rose plantations near Kazanlak. Visit of a typical  operating rose-distillery where the secrets of rose oil production will be revealed. Rose oil, a valued component in the perfume and cosmetics industry. After the visit of the distillery, we will travel to the carnival of this rose town,  a big attraction for the tourists. Lunch at open-air barbecue with folklore program.
In the afternoon – visit of The Thracian Kazanlak Tomb, dating back to the 4th C. BC (listed in the world natural and historical heritage of UNESCO).  Next is Etara – a unique open air museum, reproducing the way of life of the Bulgarians in the 19th c. It is a great attraction for tourists, one of the most visited places in the country.
Departure to Veliko Tarnovo. Accommodation, dinner and overnight in Grand Hotel Yantra 4* hotel (or similar).

Day 5.  VELIKO TARNOVO –  ARBANASSI – SOFIA
After breakfast city tour of the old capital of Bulgaria,  Veliko Tarnovo. Visit to the historical hill Tsarevets with the Fortress, the Patriarchal church and the Emperor Baldwin’s Tower. You will walk along the old Trade Street of Samovodska charshia. Next is visit of Arbanassi village, famous for its ancient ricly decorated churches and magnificent architecture. It used to be a residence of the Bulgarian kings.  Departure to Sofia. Accommodation, dinner and overnight in 4* hotel (Best Western Premier Thracia or similar).

Day 6. After breakfast free time. Transfer to the airport and flight back home.
