Dracula's Footsteps 2008

Itinerary:
Day 1: Bucharest - Curtea de Arges – Sibiel (320 km)
Pick up from the airport or from your hotel and drive to Curtea de Arges, former capital of Valachia, where visit the ruins of Old Princely court built by Vlad's ancestors and Manole’s Monastery, an architectural jewel from the 16th century. Before continuing further on you will enjoy a traditional lunch. On the way to Sibiu, stop to visit Cozia Monastery, built in 14th century by Dracula's grandfather, Prince Mircea The Old. The beautiful Olt Valley takes you to Sibiu, once the richest town in Transylvania, which will be in 2007 the Cultural Capital of Europe.   Then drive to the picturesque village of Sibiel and enjoy a special treat: spend the night at the farmhouse of a local family, where you also have a special home  hosted dinner. Day 2: Sibiel – Sibiu – Biertan – Sighisoara (150 km)
After breakfast drive to Sibiu, once the richest town in Transylvania. Visit the Evangelical Cathedral, the baroque style Roman Catholic Church and the best art gallery in Romania, the Brukenthal Museum.  Then drive to Medias, the town where Vlad was kept prisoner by the Hungarian king Mathias Corvinus. Then drive to the Saxon village of Biertan where you visit the fortress church that is one of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites. The church hosts the largest wing altar in Romania and was used as the residence of the Lutheran bishop of Transylvania for over 300 years. In the evening arrive in Sighisoara  Dinner and accommodation in Sighisoara. (B, D)  


 



Day 3: Sighisoara – Brasov – Bran – Sinaia (250 km) – In morning take a walking city tour of Sighisoara, the best-preserved medieval fortified town in Romania and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaller. On the walking tour of the town you will visit the famous Clock Tower Museum with its Torture and Weapons Rooms and stop in the house in which Dracula was born in 1431. Depart for  Brasov and Bran - two of Romania's well-known places. Depart to Brasov, fairy-tale town founded in the 12th century by the Saxon settlers. Brasov today still preserves its beautiful medieval atmosphere created by many Middle Age buildings. The highlight of  the city tour is surely a visit to the Gothic Black Church, the largest gothic church in South-Eastern Europe. Visit the St Nicolae Church and the First Romanian School, where a lecture about Old Brasov city will be held by a local teacher. Drive on to Bran have lunch in a traditional local restaurant. Than visit the castle – made famous by Bram Stoker's novel as the residence of the vampire count - Dracula. The castle was built by the merchants of Brasov in the 14th century to protect the border between Valachia and Transylvania.  In the evening arrive in Sinaia, the mountain resort known as the "Pearl of  the Carpathians". Day 4: Sinaia – Snagov – Bucharest (200 km)
After breakfast, visit the exclusive Peles Castle museum, once the summer residence of the Romanian Royal family. Drive back to Bucharest, the capital  city of Romania, founded in 1459 by the mighty prince Vlad. In Bucharest you will visit the Parliament Palace, the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon. Listen how the Romanian people finally succeded to topple the last communist dictator in Eastern Europe in the Revolution Square. Your tour will bring you also to the Romanian Athanaeum, the Opera House , the National Military Club, the Military Academy and the Arch of Triumph. In the evening you will enjoy the Parliament Place a fare well dinner with folkore show in a Romanian traditional restaurant.in Bucharest. Overnight in Bucharest. (B,D)

Day 5 - Bucharest
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back home (B)
